Srinagar, Jul 11: National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah on Thursday called for timely assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir to demonstrate the supremacy of security forces over terrorists, who have recently carried out a series of attacks in the Jammu region.
Speaking to reporters at a party function, Abdullah emphasized that there is no normalcy in the union territory but questioned whether the situation is worse than it was in 1996. “If it is worse, then don’t conduct the elections. If the intention is to bow down before those who are attacking, then don’t hold the elections. But if the goal is to prove the supremacy of our armed forces and police, then elections should be conducted,” he said.
Abdullah, the former chief minister of the erstwhile state of J&K, challenged the government to show courage and proceed with the elections. “If you are afraid, then don’t conduct them. But if you want to show the strength of our police and forces, and if our rulers have courage, then elections should be conducted on time, allowing the people of J&K to choose their government,” he added.
When asked about the BCCI’s decision not to send the cricket team to Pakistan, Abdullah noted that this is not a new situation. “We have not witnessed a bilateral series in either country for many years now. It is the BCCI’s decision whether to send the team to play a tournament,” he said.
Abdullah also addressed the responsibility for improving relations between India and Pakistan, stating that Pakistan must play a significant role by stopping attacks and improving the atmosphere. “Pakistan has to play its part in improving relations between the two countries,” he added.
The Jammu region has been recently shaken by a series of ambushes and terror attacks, particularly in the border districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, and Reasi.
Regarding the NEET examination, Abdullah called for a prompt decision. “It is a grave injustice to the future of the youth. We hope a decision is taken soon, whether by way of an inquiry, the court, or the government,” he said.
Abdullah also revealed that the National Conference would include a comprehensive package for women in its election manifesto. “A lot has to be done to give women a status in society and a share in the development of J&K. We are formulating a scheme, a package for women in our manifesto,” he said.
